Daddy liked to tell us the story of Grandma Lil's wedding breakfast. She and Grandpa Ken were married around the same time that HRH Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten. It was the same day or the day thereafter, I think.
The princess had filet de sole mountbatten, perdreau en casserole, haricots verts, pommes noisette, salade royale and bombe glacee princess elizabeth.
Grandma Lil was the daughter of migrant farmers. Her young life was straight out of a Steinbeck novel. She attended school when she could, but picked whatever was in season wherever the family moved to, looked after her younger siblings and at night helped her mother with the washing taken in to make ends meet.
Fish were free if you were willing to catch them, so the fileted fish wasn't a problem. Green beans are never a problem for farm laborers; frying potato balls in butter wasn't a stretch, nor was gathering in-season greens and veggies to toss a salad. The partridge was a bit harder to come by, but a friend of the family had frozen partridges so even the casserole was found to be possible to bless this young woman's beginning in married life with the charming Irishman she'd wowed with her dancing.
