Does anyone else see the unintended humour of this?

My first reaction to this picture was incredulous laughter, but though I shared with friends and family members, they didn't see the irony.

I've priced the items mentioned by Amazon:
- Kindle - $189.00
- Blackberry - $259.99 unlocked. Granted, there may be plans that let you get this for a penny, but one would still need to factor in the long-term cost of the plan bills.
- PC - An average price for an average new unit seems to be in the $350.00 range.
- Android - $351.87 unlocked.
- Mac - $959.98 macbook laptop
- iPad - $556.00
- iPhone - $369.99 for refurbished unit. $748.99 for new (people REALLY pay this much??!!)

Add a $9.99 Kindle bestseller title to the roster, and the total amount spent comes to $3046.82.

Let that sink in. $3046.82 to buy a book and read it everywhere this month, knowing that technology quickly evolves, and that there will always be another costly gadget available in a few weeks or months. $3046.82 to read a book on electronic devices that will be obsolete in a year's time.

I buy a book once and read it everywhere, but I typically spend between $0.50 and $25.00. Though the technology of hemp-, flax- or tree-based paper and glue is as old as dirt, my unit doesn't require that I spend hundreds every few months or years to upgrade. It also doesn't require that I register information electronically to read, and doesn't block me from sharing with friends.

I think I'll stick to the old way on this one.

  1. I'm a little late to the party on this one, but I could not agree more with you, Autumn. You have to admit, though, your "read everywhere" is a special skill that not everyone can master - i can barely walk and talk at the same time, i have no idea how you walk and read! :)

  2. Not late at all. And my "special skill" is special in the short bus sense. When walking without something to focus on, I can (and frequently do) drop off the curb, walk into the pole, the wall, the window, the parked car...it takes skill to unintentionally walk into things one is looking straight at. ;)
