End of April update

Caoimhe's kidneys have grown somewhat, though not enough to justify another lasix test at this time. We're still in wait-and-see mode. The pediatric nephrologist was kind enough to state we can begin getting ultrasounds done locally instead of driving three hours to Cincinnatti Children's Hospital. Diagnosis hasn't changed: severe congenital hydronephrosis and hydroureter due to partial blockage.

My foster sister, Heidi, is undergoing the same with her son, though little Mark's case was worse--he was born with only one functioning kidney, and that kidney had a partial blockage. Having finally stayed healthy enough to endure surgery, it was found that muscle tissue had entwined with the ureter going into the kidney. Now that the blockage is gone, he's operating at full capacity for his little body.

Ultrasounds and lasix tests can monitor, but can't reveal cause. We don't know what Caoimhe is undergoing, or whether she knows pain so continually that she feels no need to cry--only that her kidneys are distended--one grossly so.

Neither of my babies is ill at present (knock on wood.) We're coming off of a solid 2 months of high fevers and viruses. Since Aria goes back to school this week, we'll see how long this lasts.

Jesse has recovered enough from his surgery to move with ease, though only time will tell if he's regained his equilibrium yet. Since he's been summoned for jury duty, I can only pity the poor defendant if he hasn't. He's on call for 6 weeks according to the juror summons.

Maman will be heading to parts south soon, joining Mama Sheila on an antique-dealer's delight: 100 miles of rummage sales. We hope to hear from her in a few weeks' time, whole and still solvent.

Jesse's father, James, will be visiting us in another couple of weeks. I know the boys are looking forward to the visit, even as they both audibly wonder what happened to their real father when I mention our conversation, in which he stated that he wanted to be here for the 4:00 a.m. wake-ups and mid-afternoon meltdowns with loud protests against the abysmal state of affairs political and diaper-related.

I miss Mommy and Caryn greatly, but they're aware that we'll be visiting as soon as vacation can be re-accrued...probably later this summer. Actually, I miss all the grandparents, but it's easier to drive the girls to MO (where we also have an established pharmacy connection for Caoimhe's prescriptions) than it is to deal with airports, so my other beloved family members, and they're numerous, are stuck with pictures for awhile longer.
